Cat on a Leash

We live in an apartment. We adopted a cat about 2 years ago. She has always been an indoor cat; even before we adopted her. As it turns out, this cat will not eat anything but grass or her food; she turns her nose at treats, fish, catnip, etc. We were able to train her to walk on a leash by "rewarding" her with the giant grass patch outside. The following is a pictorial account of her time spent while hooked up to a leash for a "walk."

"I know I can eat it... but do I want to touch it?"

"Ahhh.... warm hard thing to lay on"
notice the open door in the background. If she gets scared she bolts for our apartment at the speed of light

"Let's walk in circles around Daddy"

I was one of those people who didn't think it was likely that a cat could be trained to happily walk with a leash on. She may not go far, and she may be easily scared, but I prefer that over a cat who continually tries to escape.

Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo on the Cliff

I am really looking forward to Hayao Miyazaki's new film, which has been number one in Japan for weeks. My favorite movie of all time is a creation of Studio Ghibli, entitled Howl's Moving Castle. If you haven't seen this gem, I recommend renting it ASAP!

A brush with nature

I took this photograph yesterday while crouching in a mountain meadow full of butterflies and wildflowers. Professor Folts would be pleased. The occasion? A 25th birthday celebration and the need to go camping in the mountains.

Deception and Agenda

"She's so cute!"

"Thanks," was my reply as I was pulled by the white husky down to Willamette Park to get some exercise. Randel and I had happily offered to puppy-sit (I classify 2.5 years as puppy) for a friend, and we honestly enjoyed having the spunky, playful energy puff in the house. She reminded us of our old-man puppy, who has been gone about a year and a half. We love dogs. We learned very quickly, however, that this puppy, Siku, had an agenda.

We naively let her off of the leash in the park to play catch and she did the following:

-chased the ball
-retrieved it
-chased the ball a second time
-bit at the ball without grabbing it
-briefly paused, tail in air
-took a dead run in our opposite
.... reminder.... she was not ours........
-quick break to eat some unknown substance in a garbage bag that someone left on the ground
-ran from us when we got within 10 feet of her
-released a quick poo in the soccer field
..... all the while we are chasing her and calling her name........
-rolled in some tall grass
-ran after a tall terrier dog; also off of a leash but clearly more obedient
-circled a tree... didn't realize I anticipated her move and was on the other side
-was pounced on by yours truly

Long story short, Siku was our house-guest for 5 days. She did get to go to the park again... only to pick berries and dream of the day when she could run free again.

The End

If you are in the area throughout August, I have a small show at the Corvallis Arts Center. The exhibition features encaustic paintings that deal with issues of digestion. It is my first solo show outside of university, so I am excited!

Ah, to be this clever....

I am the last person you'd want to approach about pop culture references. Is it a matter of memory? No-- my memory serves me well enough. I happen to think it is a matter of attention span. And exposure. Thank you, my friends, for being the catalyst for my cause.

This photo was brought to my attention by someone who happened to know what it was referencing. Proudly I can say that yesterday I learned the connection between the Hindenburg's tragic end and the manatee.

The age-old question ?

Am I ready to faithfully dedicate my time to updating this blog that I have created? Haha... sounds like I am preparing for marriage or motherhood.....
