Thanksgiving, picnic-style, at our apartment. Some of our new friends had not celebrated Thanksgiving before, so it was a treat to host the event.

...Miko got in on the "giving-ness" of Thanksgiving, too.

This type of Christmas tree is called a "Frasier" and it was brought to NY from the Carolinas. It's strange not having a noble fir, but our first frasier has nice shape and smells of the holiday.

I became enamored by this artwork at the IFPDA Print Fair. I learned that as Japan opened up trade with Britain in the mid 1860's, Japanese printmakers started to integrate anilin dyes with traditional vegetable inks.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Yesterday we trained to NYC to watch the live filming of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Upon arrival to the city we walked 5th Avenue in an attempt to find an inexpensive umbrella. It was windy and wet. Successfully we purchased two black umbrellas from a corner vendor and it didn't cost the arm and leg that we expected given the district we were in.

We ate lunch that was "meh," and "overpriced," as Randel so eloquently described. And the food had a lot of "snoot." Next, we went to the Museum of Modern Art. We saw Monet's waterlilied and we were turned away from the Tim Burton exhibit because only members were allowed to preview it until November 22. Boo. Guess we'll have to go back.

Randel ate a hotdog following the MoMA experience, and we walked many blocks, past Broadway, to the DSJS studio, where we waited in line for almost 3 hours. Thankfully the waiting area was covered. Kept us warm. We questioned the $1 hot dog vendors who passed by... what kind of meat was it to only be $1?

Tim Burton Exhibition at MoMA. Freaking Awesome archway!

The Daily Show Studio. No photos were allowed once we entered the building. They even took my keys away from me during filming because I had a multi-tool.

Waiting in line... getting slightly annoyed with someone behind me who wouldn't cover their cough.

In line; just got a ticket! Getting even MORE excited than I already was...

We were toward the front of the line and ended up with fabulous seats. The studio was very intimate and the set was brightly lit. Jon's desk was smaller than I imagined.

We laughed very hard and often during the show. There was a stand-up comedian who got us "warmed-up," there was loud music while we waited for the show to begin, Jon took some questions before the show began, and the musical guest was Jacks Mannequin. We were given free DVD's as we left the show, and thankfully, they returned my keys. A truly wonderful experience.

Dinner was amazing. Best fries we've ever had. Ate at Agua Dulce on 9th Avenue. We strongly recommend.

The yards and streets are filled with leaves this time of year. I love the feel and sound of crunchy leaves under my feet. We brought out the cat to share Autumn with her. She tried to eat the leaves. Every time I exposed grass for her she sat in it... and continued to eat leaves.

Sage Monkey Kathryn and Monk Randel embarked on a Halloween Journey last evening with a Zombie, Rainbow Brite, The Count (Sesame Street), a Freudian Slip, an FBI Reject (FCI), and various other characters. The Monk's outfit was fashinoned from bed sheets and pillow cases. Everyone was impressed that he shaved his head for the occasion. As for me, my monkey dancing made people laugh.

My Dad would be proud :)

Pumpkin Patch

Drove out the northeast fork of Long Island today in search for farms and pumpkin patches. About 30 miles from our house there were patches one after another, and a particularly delicious-looking pie stand where we hope to take Randel's Mom someday. I looked out the passenger window expecting to see the cascades towering to my right, but I realized I am not in Oregon. It was a strange feeling...

Once we chose a patch we walked to the far edge. We picked out smaller pumpkins this year as we are on a serious budget.

Randel was going to pick the pumpkin that was the furthest away, but alas, it had a minor defect.

-Because I don't get dirty enough...
-Look family--- there are farms on Long Island!

All in all it was a beautiful, sunny day. We saw calico deciduous forests, swans, wooden geese, chickens, and pony rides offered at a wine-tasting venue (because those two activities clearly go hand-in-hand). We stopped at a farm stand to get some fresh veggies and headed home. Hit a garage sale for some awesome deals on studio and house furniture.

Sculpture class field trip to Dia: Beacon. I learned that an abandoned Nabisco warehouse can be transformed into awe-inspiring display spaces. I also learned that Dan Flavin has an art institute.

Montauk and the East End

We visited Montauk and East Hampton on Sunday. I walked along the Atlantic Ocean for the first time, and Randel purchased a pipe of unknown origin from an Estate Sale in Southampton. We really wanted the furniture but alas, we didn't have enough $ or snoot.

Starbucks--- lots of onlookers.... and I am uncomfortable with being in the center of attention

My first time in Brooklyn, I stripped down to leggings and a cami on the sidewalk at 9:15 pm. We tied helium-filled balloons to ourselves while inside of a Starbucks. I walked around in a group where the girls wore self-made garbage bag gowns (biodegradable--- the whole outfit sans shoes). We had our photo taken numerous times and our presence made folks smile. I went to an after-party and talked with other artists participating in the Festival. I had a great first time in Brooklyn.

Pollock-Krasner House Get-Together

This is the house where painters Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner lived in the Hamptons. Last Saturday, the graduate students in fine art and art history, as well as faculty, were invited to attend a potluck at this living history museum. No photographs were allowed in the studio but I am hoping to copy one or two from a sneaky friend to share (Alisha and her hip-level camera shots).

Wonderful food and wonderful company. The potluck was followed by a trip to the beach within the fork of Long Island. Of course I immediately went into the water and started poking around for wildlife. I found some plants. Kristina, who is from Bulgaria, ate her first s'mores on this beach trip. We were also visited by many deer.

Not the Atlantic, but getting closer with each visit.

Yes, that piece of wood has a handle.

Storm King Sculpture Park

Stopped at a garage sale along the way. Here we are, posing with our newfound treasures. I purchased a Finding Nemo stereoscope complete with projector and slides. I am excited to use these in the studio! Really, very, very excited!!!!

Maya Lin's Waterscapes exhibition was spectacular. She really knows how to use minimal materials to communicate.

My favorite piece was a fiberglass sculpture that blended in nicely with it's surroundings. Artist Manuel Bromberg.

Storm King is an expansive park. This is a scale shot of our sculpture class walking to see the Richard Serra sculpture in the distance....

... and closer. Massive art. There is a dirt spot underneath where numerous people have stood underneath. I have a much greater appreciation for this man's work now that I've experienced it.
